Crazy to think it's almost been a year since I last updated this blog.
I do apologize, as I have been devoting most of my time to my other blog, as I have been working on my health this past year.

Anyhow, it is THAT time of year again....the most AMAZING time of year in my humble opinion.....FALL TIME!
This is the time when the air gets crisp and breezy...spiders build their intricate webs in every corner outside...acorns fall to the ground...and the leaves change brilliant colors... *happy sigh*

For the next few months, I shall be posting all things Autumn/Fall...all of the gloriousness of this amazing time of year! Think pumpkins, cinnamon and cloves, a cup of hot coffee on a chilly night...animals in the wild preparing for winter...fire in the fireplace....cuddling up with the one you love on a crisp autumn evening...

Hello everyone! Just wanted to drop in with a little update.

Just got home a few minutes ago. I've had an awesome day today!

First, around 12 o'clock, I went walking with my sis-in-law Angie and my neicy poo Carrigan. We walked the green belt and it was absolutely perfect weather! Breezy and 72. I think we ended up walking around 2.7 miles today! It was wonderful walking around and enjoying God's beautiful creations!

ck up a few extra things to make taco soup with later this week.

I'm trying to go walking a few days each week so I can work my way up to my ultimate goal: running!!

Anyhow, I must go now and renew my license tag as well as do LOTS of cleaning.

Okay, so I haven't updated with an ACTUAL post since summer, and I apologize.
My priorities have been else where (ie: work/health stuff)

Anyhow, I'm home from work today with a stomach bug (insert Pepto song here, minus the heartburn) lol
I'm mainly laying around chewing on toast and listening to the fall breeze coming through the windows.

I am so glad fall is finally here! The average temp this week is around 72 for the high.
There is something about fall that invigorates me. The colors of the changing leaves from gold to crimson. The corn mazes and hay rides. Football season and marching band competitions. Apple cider and scary stories. For some reason it feels as though my mind and body can relax during fall.

Hey everyone! Sorry for not writing, but I've got a lot going on here lately.
Still in the process of moving *Lord knows that takes awhile*
I've also been finishing up requirements for the GBS *click here to read blog*

I started my training for Labor and Delivery yesterday. My manager is having me train in O.R. for the next few months *practice for C-sections*. I am to study the surgical instruments used, practice scrubbing in and of course sterile technique
It's awesome to be back in L&D, esp as a nurse this time! I can't explain it, but I felt like I "came back home". It just feels right to be back in L&D, very peaceful.
After a few months of training in O.R. I will then start training for deliveries for 2 or so months then the last month I will be training in the Nursery and learn to 'receive babies' during the deliveries.

I've also been studying and practicing more Photoshop editing techniques. Thankfully I'm getting the hang of things. Here are just a few pics I've taken over the years freshly edited:

As usual, God never ceases to amaze me! I got a call last week from human resources while I was working. There is a lady in the department that I love who has helped me through my changing promotions at work over the years. Anyways, she called to tell me there is another opening in labor and delivery for night shift and that the manager wants to offer the job to me!

**Keep in mind that I interviewed twice for a night shift position 2 months ago and it was given to another girl with lots more experience** Oh yeah, did I mention that openings in L&D are few and far between??

Anyhow, naturally I said yes! My last day in Med/Surg will be the 19th and then I will start my training in the O.R. for a few weeks to get experience for C-sections and then I will be training to deliver babies after that!

I'm so excited but more over greatful that God would bless me with such a wonderful opportunity, I know He wants me there.

On a side note, later that day as I was leaving work I listened to a voicemail from a manager at a neighboring hospital...and she was offering me a job at their L&D!!
God does have a sense of humor..

Anyhow, I must get off of here and get some sleep..I've got a day of packing and errands to run tomorrow.

Finances and Moving

Well, I've been a registered nurse for almost four months now...sheesh time has flown! Even though I am making more money, I've discovered that keeping up with finances has been somewhat difficult. Don't get me wrong, I'm paying all of my bills and things but as far as saving money goes....NADA!
Let's see there's rent, electricity, cable/Internet, groceries, medicine, gas, car payment, credit cards and NOW I get the pleasure of paying back my student loans. I know there are more expenses I've not listed...but it's late and I'm tired. lol
On a side note, my lease runs out in August and I was planning on moving into a nicer apartment, keeping the same rent price I currently have too!
Anyhow, I went to my financial guru, Mom, and she helped me put together a budget. Keeping in mind that I will hopefully have my surgery this fall/winter and will be out on medical leave from work for at least 6 weeks. To make a long story short I will be in financial trouble within the next few months if I do not do something soon. Mom suggested that I move back to her and dad's house for a few months until I get my car payed off (November), have my surgery and save a little more money.

At first I was in shock because...well the financial trouble part kind of sucks, but moving back into my parent's house at first felt like a step backward for me. Don't get me wrong, I definitely am thankful for my awesome parents and the opportunity for the much needed help. I just can't shake the whole, "I'm 25 and moving back in with my parents" thing...it sounds kind of lame.

Stepping back and looking at the whole picture, it is a good idea and the only one I can think of that would work right now.

I feel better about the whole situation now that more details have been worked out. I will be paying rent at my parent's house, assisting with groceries and cleaning. Dad and I have started cleaning out the spare room downstairs. Dad plans to put in new carpet, patch up a few holes and paint the walls.

Anyhow, I've started packing a few boxes...God knows how much stuff I have...it will take me awhile. lol

Well as Mom says, "It's time to start a new chapter in your life!"

A quote that hit home

Something at work has been bugging me for a long time. It is a subject of skill...I mean, it is a staple...a foundation of nursing ....something that takes practice and patience.

What am I talking about?? I am talking about starting IV's.

In the beginning, as a lowly Nurse Intern I wanted... and even craved to start IV's. As sad as it sounds, I would find any viable excuse to start an IV. The best part was that I could start almost ANY IV, especially the ones seasoned Nurses could not get.

Well....now that I am a full fledged Nurse, you would think that I would continue to have the confidence and skill to continue starting IV's with no problem.

Huh...sadly I am in the rut of "I suck at starting IV's"...a place I NEVER thought I would be. I feel like I have this rain cloud of bad luck that follows me as I go to start an IV. Even if the patient has the most AMAZINGLY GINORMOUS veins....I poke only to find the vein blows....
*sigh* Anymore, my courage...my confidence is zilch and I feel defeated BEFORE I even start.

Well, tonight I was praying to God and asking Him to help me start my IV's and to get out of this rut. I prayed for a simple answer, one that would make sense and one that even I could understand....

****NOW comes the part of the post-title*****
I was going through my email this evening and stumbled upon a cute email of quirky smart quotes. As I was reading, one quote in particular stood out to me concerning my IV-problem:

"If you lack the courage to start, you have already finished"

Maybe....just maybe the reason I am doing so poorly with IV's lately is because I have a 'defeated' attitude towards it. It makes sense.

God is awesome.....
I truly TRULY believe I will get out of this crappy IV-less rut!! By God I will!

Stomach bug...

Bleh...I've got some nasty stomach bug right now. I had to call in sick to work last night, something I absolutely HATE doing.

At first I thought it was my body trying to adjust to a new medicine my doctor put me on, but after not having the medicine for over 24 hours and I still feel like this...I'm going to guess that's not it.

I hate feeling sick...as a matter of fact I hate feeling helpless in general.

Yes, I know that I work in a hospital, in which I am exposed to all sorts of germs and icky things...but still..I'm suppose to be super woman! lol

.....Okay, enough of the rant.

Aside from feeling like crap, life is great. I am thankful for my job at the hospital, I feel as though I am truly where I need to be, as far as my career is concerned. I will be switching to night shift pretty soon if not on my floor, another one. I just like working nights for some reason. Don't get me wrong, it's still crazy busy...but the hustle & bustle at the nurse's station is diminished somewhat.

Spring is in full force right now and it is absolutely gorgeous! I love Tennessee in the fall and spring time. The mountains are absolutely gorgeous!

When I start feeling better I want to go hiking soon and do a little photography while I'm at it.

WARNING...work related venting

To make a VERY long story short, I received report on 6 patients I was to have for the remainder of the shift. The nurse lost most of his information on the patients....he didn't give 3/4 of the patient's medicines today....he left me to do a transfer with no patient information....4 out of 6 patient's had not received pain medicine that they needed due to surgeries....one was left in pee for a few hours and to top it off he was looking up stuff on ebay on the medicine cart computer.

Okay, I'm usually a very upbeat individual that likes to spread peace and love wherever I go...

however when it comes to my patient's I am VERY protective of them.
I was LIVID...

I knew I was mad especially when half of my co-workers that have never seen me mad were backing away from me while I vented in the breakroom.
No one....and I mean NO ONE deserves to be treated that way ESPECIALLY when they are sick in the hospital.

Grrrrr!!!!

Sorry it's been a couple of weeks since last I posted. I've mostly been working, reading *a lot* and enjoying the great outdoors since the beginning of Spring!

I absolutely love Spring, it is a time for rebirth...newness...the beginning of something fresh. The weather here has been gorgeous. Sunny and warm ranging between 65-74 degrees.

I love my new neighborhood, it is in fact the first neighborhood I've lived in that has sidewalks! As I walk around the neighborhood soaking up the sun and inhale the sweet windy air, I am greeted by the friendly faces of my neighbors. I truly enjoy walking here. My mailbox is about 1/4 of a mile away from my building. All of the daffodils, tulips and dogwoods are in bloom here. All of the trees, plants and grass are strewn with beautiful shades of green. (happy sigh)

Work is going well. I currently have 4 more 'work days' until I am on my own. At first I was scared at the thought of 'being on my own'. To be honest, if I was working with a group of people that did not help one another...that would be true. But thankfully, I work with a loving and incredibly helpful group of nurses and techs. I know that it will take awhile to get rooted and grow in my position at work. Nursing is one of those professions that truly takes years to master. Even nurse that have been in the profession for over 10 years still learn new things each day. I just hope and pray that the Lord will bless me with the courage, strength, peace, knowledge, confidence and patience each day that I work. I want to be the kind of nurse that has an abundance of knowledge to enlighten my patients' and their families with. I want to ALWAYS love and care for everyone as they very much deserve to be.
Being a patient in a hospital IS scary. As a patient you feel helpless and vulnerable, you are at the mercy of your caregivers. As a patient you are at your worst...mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.

Have any of you been a patient in a hospital?? If so, how was your care? Did you feel at ease during your stay?

Dad came over to my apartment this evening to spend some time with his 'grand-kittnen', Luna. Naturally, Luna absolutely loved dad and snuggled on him for a good portion of the evening.
Since there was not much to watch on t.v., we popped in the dvd player, 'Darby O'Gill and the Little People'. I barely recall watching this on disney channel as a kid *re-run of course* but dad remembers it well. I think he said he was around 5 or 6 years old when he first saw it. First of all, Happy St. Patrick's day everyone!

It's been a great day. Ms. Luna absolutely loves her new home *and new mama*
This morning while making breakfast, I watched my 'sis' Angie and her fellow business partner present a fashion show for a local morning talk show on t.v. Angie was the commentator, while models, including Megan (my other 'sis') showed off beautiful gowns and tuxedos. After watching the show, I kicked back and read a good book called, 'The Battle Belongs to the Lord' by Joyce Meyer. I cannot count the times I've read this book, but every time I read it I get something new out of it. A little while later, Geoff came over to play with Luna. Luna absolutely LOVES uncle Geoffy! So much so in fact that she slept around his neck while he was surfing the net on my computer. Mom and Megan joined us for a little while and we all got to catch up on everything going on with each other.

After everyone left, I got ready and headed over to mom and dad's for artsy crafts and dinner. Let me just say one thing...my Mom puts Martha Stewart to shame! Last week we went to Michael's and bought stuff to make flower arrangements and wreaths with. Tonight I watched in awe as my Mom put together the most GORGEOUS wreath for my apartment!

One thing I love to do is go antique shopping with my mom. We are fortunate to have nice antique stores here where I live. Some stores have ridiculously high prices and some stores are just plain awesome with their prices. What I love most is when you find that little something special...kind of a diamond in the rough.

As you all know, Monkey kitty was home sick for mom and dad's so we brought her back. Anyhow, mom bought me a kitten from the animal shelter and she is gorgeous! I will be picking her up from the vet on Monday afternoon! I'm so excited! Her name is Luna, because she is a beautiful white fuzzy kitty with a sweet disposition. Life after Nursing school...

First of all, I want to thank everyone for the well-wishes! I am thankful for everyone of you!

It's still hard to believe that I will not be studying for a test anymore. In fact it still hasn't sunken in that I'm out of school...and it's been three months!
I guess I will never truly stop learning, especially being in the medical field.
Even though I am outrageously thankful to pass boards and officially have the title of 'Registered Nurse', I feel....weird. It's hard to explain, but I feel as though I must figure out how to 'live again'. For the past 6 years, my life has consisted sole of studying, working eating and sleeping...oh yeah and the occasional outing with friends.
It's kind of sad that I have to do some soul searching to figure out what I like now. I mean some things are still the same, ie: photography, coffee and books.
For example, when I went shopping for towels for my new place, I went straight for the wisteria ones with butterflies...instead of pink...or even gold and blue. Another example is when my Monky kitty didn't work out at the apartment, I was seriously considering getting a small dog....A DOG!!! Me...Amy....that has grown up with cats her whole life!
Anyhow, I guess it will take some time to figure out what I like now. It's like trying to figure out who I am all over again!

Am I the only one this has ever happened to?? I tend to be different than most people anyhow.... lol.

PRAISE JESUS!! Oh my....ooooooooooooooooooooooh my........
God is so good.
The past 2 days have been an absolute nightmare waiting for my results. I seriously had it in my mind that I was going to have to retake my nursing boards exam. SERIOUSLY!! That was THE hardest test I have taken in my entire life. I walked in the testing center with a general peace and left it a mental train wreck. The thought of having to wait 2 whole days (48 hours) for my results absolutely wore me out.
It boggles my mind to even think about nurses back in the day had to wait 6 weeks for their results!
I cannot even begin to describe how awesome and relieved I feel right now. I am thankful beyond words for my God who loves me. HE put it on my heart years 4 years ago to become a nurse. Although I looked up to the sky and replied, "Who? Me??!! HA! That's funny", God had better plans for me. It's been a long and weary road getting to where I am now, but I would not take one bit of it back for even a second.
I pray that I will make my Heavenly Father happy by serving others as He wants me to each and everyday. I am so very thankful for this gift...
For better or for worse I AM Nurse Amy!!!

Wow...My brain is fried

Studying for boards is like guessing the correct winning numbers for the lottery. Thus my minor frustration in studying at present. The big stuff I'm focusing on are as follows:
-Electrolyte imbalances
-Cardiac -Pharmacology
-o.b.

Many of my former classmates have passed NCLEX already in which I praise God for.
One definite plus is that I don't have to make a set score, I must get more questions right than wrong...consistently.

Interesting yet bothersome quick story:
At around 8:30 I was in bed at my apartment when I hear someone banging on my front door. After a minute of banging someone actually opened my front door. It was the maintenance man changing the filter on my heat pump. I was in my pajamas...what if I had been in the shower?!! Seriously, can he really do that??!! I'm calling my landlord on Monday about it. I mean, it would be different if I had gotten a note the day before so as to prepare. I am thankful, however, for having been fully clothed although quite disheveled in appearance.

I'm doing a photo shoot tomorrow for my sis-in-law's new bridal business. They are sponsoring a bridal/fashion show in which my oldest brother will be modeling with Miss Jonesborough, amongst others. This should be interesting.

After a few days of going through lots and LOTS of things...as well as moving into my new home, I can finally sit back and rest, which is exactly what I'm doing this morning.

Wow, so much has happened since last I wrote...let me see if I can break it down a little...

PART 1:

THE MOVE WITH MY AWESOME FAMILY

Over the course of 5 days or so, my AMAZING family helped me move into my new home.

Mom took me shopping and helped me get miscellaneous things such as: trash cans / drawer organizers / shower curtain / fire extinguisher etc. She also has helped IMMENSELY with making my new place feel like a real home. (only am amazing Momma could do that!)

My brother Geoff & 'sis' Megan, not only helped move a lot of my stuff, BUT they donated a vacuum cleaner, towels / wash cloths and a little t.v. for my bed room. (WOW!!)

Next, brother George & 'sis' Angie also helped move my things as well as donated a GORGEOUS...Big and VERY comfy couch that they found at a garage sale for only $40!! Angie also had some Bible books, mini door/window alarms and got some miscellaneous stuff to decorate my home with. George, as only my smart and mechanical savvy brother could do, checked out my home to make sure everything was working as it should.

Last but certainly not least, my daddy (aka my hero) has saved me from many perils! Not only did he move most of the big heavy stuff (ie: my bed/t.v.), but he fixed the broken water pipe under my kitchen sink *so I could do dishes*, fixed my broken bed ( oh yeah... my childhood/antique bed that has been welded 2 times finally broke ), set up my speaker system in the living room & t.v. in my bedroom AND stayed the night with me to make sure I felt safe in my new place. The ring tone I have for my dad suits him well...the Indiana Jones theme song!!

God has blessed me ever so abundantly for my incredible family...I don't know what I would do without any of them!! (I am sooo tearing up as I write this)

PART 2:

THE FIRST NIGHT & TROUBLE WITH MONKY

As was expected the first night, I got very little sleep. In between listening to foreign sounds around the apartment and Monky kitty crying all night...I got around 2 hours of sleep....followed by waking up for a lovely 12 1/2 hour shift at the hospital.

Speaking of Monky kitty....oh my goodness...what a mess. As many of you know, Monky is an easily frightened cat that has clung to me for a few years. She is your typical scrapper cat in which her 'meow is worse than her bite'. Poor girl started losing her fur when I started Nursing school. When I took her to the vet I was told that she was a nervous cat...so much in fact that they wanted to put her on Valium....yes Valium. Anyhow, Mom helped me drive her to my new home Sunday evening. I had Monky in her girly pink kitty carrier sitting in my lap for the whole 4 minutes it took to get here. Needless to say...she did the "I am soooo pissed at you"-meow ALLLL they way there.

Naturally I expected it would take some time for Monky to adjust to her new surroundings, thinking that she would at least eat and use her litter box at least once in 24 hours. Wow, was I wrong. Monky hid either under the couch or beneath my nightstand the ENTIRE time she had been here. I was constantly worried about her, especially since she was not touching her food/water and would hardly go near me...not to mention keep me up all night with her unusual 'pissed off/scared'-meow and walking on my chest *can we say passive aggressive??*

Dad came over last night to help fix my bed and after attempting to coax Monky out from under the couch with a bribery of McD's grilled chicken *which worked*, dad and I took her back to his and Mom's house. We decided since she was not use to being an 'only cat'. I was not about to have her die from 'failure to thrive'. I knew Monky was happy to be back home, when she went up to her arch nemesis 'Black boy' kitty and gave him a kiss!! Mom said she is eating again and quite happy where she is.

Even though I am now cat-less, I feel as though a HUGE weight has been lifted off my shoulders now that Monky is happily back at her home. I am now in search for a kitten to raise as an only-child-cat.

Today is one of my off days and I actually got to sleep in until 9 a.m.!! After waking up, I got dressed and walked over to the club house's fitness center and hopped on the exercise bike for around 10 minutes and did close to 2 miles. I then headed over to the coffee bar and brewed myself a delicious cup of house blend coffee. The walk back was soooo nice. It is breezy and cool, I think it's around 58 degrees outside. I currently have the sliding glass door open to air out my home as I type this blog.

My plans for the day include:

-going by dad & George's shop

-study for boards

-clean & finish unpacking

I'm Moving!

Wow...I'm moving. I'm finally getting my very first apartment! *insert independent woman song here*

Through God's wonderful timing and a little spiritual push, I pursued a search for an apartment on Monday. I called around various apartment complexes around town and found a vacancy at a beautiful apartment complex. Needless to say, I walked in and knew immediately that this place was for me!

I get to sign my 6 month lease tomorrow as well as continue hauling miscellaneous things from mom & dad's to the apartment.
I am pleasantly overwhelmed by the support I've gotten from family & friends.

In fact the few items I did not have ie: towels/washcloths/couch/ t.v., have been donated to me! Seriously! At the moment, one of my brothers is trying to get me a washer and dryer from a friend who has extra *I think the guy rents out homes**
Today, mom and I started fixing up the apartment to make it feel more like home. I can't wait to post pics!!
Anyhow, the big stuff ie: bed/couch/fireplace, will be moved on Saturday.

Well, it's 1:30 a.m. and I am finally getting tired. I will post more soon

Today has been great! By the grace of God, I went to the gym for around an hour and got my VERY FIRST endorphin high!! I have NEVER in my life had an endorphin high...I know...it's kinda sad.
At the gym I got on the elliptical for 5 minutes to warm up my muscles and then headed over to the weights. I focused on abs/obliques/biceps/triceps/glutes today. I want to say I lifted for approximately 20-ish minutes. I did low weight and high reps.
I then hopped on the treadmill for 30 minutes...and get this...I ACTUALLY RAN! What surprised me even more is that I did not fall over and feel as though I would die afterwards!
This makes me want to go back to the gym and keep going!

Anyhow, I've taken full advantage of the endorphin high and came home did laundry, changed the sheets on my bed and vacuumed.

WOOO HOOO for ENERGY!

In between work, going to the gym and hanging out with my friends, I have been studying for NCLEX (Nursing boards) and the upcoming ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) certification.

Aside from studying the much needed electrolytes & renal (kidney) sections, I'm pretty much ready for boards. I'm taking an advanced EKG class next month before boards so that will be a nice refresher course.

I'm VERY much looking forward to spring! Don't get me wrong, I still love my happy cold weather but I like the change. I wonder how many of my tulips will come up this spring. I think we started out with around 40-ish bulbs but between the cats and other various animals that live in our woods, I believe we will have a few less.

Sorry it's been so long since last I did an actual update.
Our internet has been down at the house for the past week, not to mention our power has been going off at the wee hours of the morning for the last 2 days as well.
It has been COLD...like... 9 degrees celcius cold.

How am I updating you ask? I am at my brother Geoff' and sis in law Megan's home. We are going out with some friends to Olive Garden tonight and then to someones house to play video games and hang out some more.

There is a nurse residency program I am required to attend one day a month from 9a-5p for the next 5 months at work. I went yesterday and listened to redundant topics in which were crammed into our heads the last semester of school. The good part of the day was that I got to be with my nursing school buds I haven't seen since the last day of finals.
ALSO I finally got a confirmation to schedule my NCLEX (aka: Nursing boards)!
I am taking it next month on the 26th at 8am. After I pass that I will OFFICIALLY be a Registered Nurse.
*prayers needed for Geoffy and I to pass our nursing boards the FIRST time we take it please*

Well, I'm off to spend some time with Geoff and Megan.

Okay, so I am Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally over this semester....in fact, I am reeeeeeeally over ETSU.
My group and I just finished our care of communities 'final presentation' on driving safety.
Now I am waiting 2 hours to take my final so I can then go home.

I still have HESI to study for, but thank God that it isn't until Friday and I finally have the HESI book to study from.

Getting things in order

As of now, I officially have 3 classes left at ETSU

I still have quite a bit of 'busy work' to do, not to mention clinical.

After Monday I will have 184 clinical hours which will leave 56 hours. I believe my last clinical day will be November 23rd (whooo hoooo!)
As for busy work I still have to finish my management learning contract, write a proposal on performance improvement for the hospital unit, a reflection of my clinical experience and finally a paper on the unit meeting I attended.

As for my community nursing class, my group and I have to present our community education project at a local high school on driving safety next wednesday. We still have a little bit of information to iron out before the presentation but I have a feeling we will do well.
We also have a take home final exam *which is awesome!* and I believe that is all we have to do in that class.

Last but not least I still have to pass the HESI next Friday the 14th.

After all of this is finished...THEN all I have to do is get my diploma!!!

So far so good! I know I cannot stop saying this, but I LOVE my new job in Med/Surg. I really feel as though I've found my nitch. It's funny because Mom is a Cardiac Nurse, Geoff will be a Cardiac Nurse and I like Med/Surg and O.B. (funny how genetics works isn't it??)

On another awesome note, it snowed a little yesterday! I cannot remember the last time it snowed in October! Like the cold weather freak that I am, I walked around in the 30 degree weather on my lunch break in my scrub pants and t-shirt. *happy sigh*

Okay, so today has been my much needed off day...so far today I have:
-written 2 papers for school
-studied for HESI
-got my fingerprints made for the Nursing boards
-accidently paid for my fingerprints twice...and of course the extra $48 is non-refundable.
-went shopping for much needed vitamins and deodorant
-took a wonderful hour long nap

Wow...can you believe that we have to get fingerprinted AND have a background check just to take the nursing boards??!! Wow...there must be a lot of felons trying to get into nursing...??

I'm soooo trying not to stress out about school. We only have 5 weeks left and I must hold on! (enter Wilson Phillips 'Hold on for one more day' song here)

The HESI retake is on the 7th and 14th of November, if the 7th is taken the I will have to schedule it for the 14th. *grrrr*
Must...be....flexible......Must....

Shew....I need some prayers you all.....MAJOR prayers.
Please pray for peace, that I will pass HESI this next go around, that I will pass all of my classes and finish up my 240 hours of clinical *in which I have 105 hours left*

Anyhow, dad made a fire downstairs and I am going to enjoy what's left of my yummy starbucks coffee and chill for an hour or so...then it's back to studying!

Well....I did not pass my exit exam, but I do have another chance. Oddly enough I got all of the hard questions correct *the critical thinking ones* but missed a bunch of the memorization questions *lab values/therapeutic drug level*.

At least I know what I need to study more now.

I will be taking the next exam in 3 weeks on November 7th.

In other news, fall is in full swing here! I absolutely LOVE it!!

Dad made a fire in the fireplace lastnight, and we watched the latest Indiana Jones movie. Mom brought Harry kitty downstairs and we put in the movie in which Harry was named after, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". We had a fabulous evening together, I cannot even remember when the last time we all had a weekend off and actually did something together.

I'm tying up loose ends with my clinical. We've had to do so much ridiculous busy work, but I'm thankful to say that the majority of it has been finished. I lack finishing up my change project, and typing a few of my 'Reflections' from clinical. Wow...I cannot wait until this semester is over!

Anyhow, I'm gonna get off of here and finish up some laundry and other school related things. This week is going to be BUSY!!!

Happy day!! Our Harry got to come home from the vet this afternoon!
The vet said she did great with the surgery and that she's been eating a ton of cat food. The moment Harry saw Mom and me she started purring like crazy! The vet said that she was well behaved and very loving. *darn right!!*

In Shock...

Okay...this morning around 5:30...mom opens the front door because she heard one of our cats crying to come in. At first she thought one of the kittens got out but then she quickly figured out it was our cat Harry, who has been gone for over 3 weeks. We basically thought she was either dead or found a new home.

Anyhow, she hobbled up the stairs and straight to the cat food bowls in the kitchen. I bent down to pet her and check her out. She had lost a lot of weight and had a hurt foot. As I looked further at her leg I noticed there was not a paw there...Yes....you read it right...no paw. Upon further assessment of her injury it turned out that her right back leg had been broken off and all that was there were two bones sticking out.

Needless to say, mom and I cried for joy that she was home but also because she was hurt. Mom took her back to her bed and cuddled Harry while we were waiting for the vet's office to open up at 7:4o.

We took her to the vet and of course they told us she was severely dehydrated, malnourished, had an infection and that they would have to amputate her leg up to her hip.

She is currently getting pain medicine and getting rehydrated and tomorrow morning she will have her leg surgery.

Wow...God is awesome!! It really hit me like a ton of bricks today...the thought of what poor Harry had been through made me feel ill. But she made it....she fought for her life and now she's back home where she knows she is loved.

*tear*

Anyhow, that was the craziness that occurred today. I've got clinical tomorrow and then the exit exam on Friday. *prayers please*

Wow...lots of stuff going on ..where to begin!?!!

Let's see..I LOVE my new job on 4th! I have a great crew to work with and 12 hour shifts, although long....it is nice working less days each week.

My awesome boss gave me today off to study for my exit exam I have on Friday. I am contemplating whether or not to have clinical on Thursday, or if I should designate it a study day. I'll keep praying about that one.

This has got to be the most busy/stressful week I've had in a loooong time. I know that even though doubts and icky things of that sort are going through my head that God will get me through to victory!

*RANDOM THOUGHT*

I think it is amazing how God puts certain people in your life at just the right time...especially when you aren't expecting it!

On another note, I am so sick of the election stuff! Whatever happened to honest / integrity filled / God fearing presidential candidates?!! Anymore it's who can be on the most TV shows or magazine covers...and who can 'persuade' the best. I know one thing for sure, we need to pray for our country!!!

One thing I am thankful for is that God knows what needs to happen and who needs to be in office. I am thankful to be a child of God and thankful to know that whatever happens it will be okay.

Well, I'm going to put on some relaxation music and head to bed. I have school from 8-3 tomorrow so I must get my beauty rest. Lord knows I need be awake for my last 6 classes of nursing school!! (that just sounds awesome!!)

Praise God!! I made a 100 on my midterm for Community Nursing! We had a scenario and 7 pages of writing / b.s.-ing information making a program plan for a fake community.

Ahhhh I actually get the day off tomorrow! No clinical, no work, no school...WOW me liiike.
I do, however, need to write a few papers for a few 'busy work' grades in my clinical. Just short one page papers on different meetings/reflection on clinical experiences etc.

Next friday is our exit exam for nursing school *again prayers that Geoff and I pass the test this day*

I currently have 4 cats on my bed and I do believe they have taken over...it's very apparent when I catch myself adjusting around them in bed...

Anywho, just wanted to do a quick update before I read, study and head to bed.

Thank God for insurance!

Last night at work I started feeling a little cruddy. I went to take my temp and it was 102!

I got home, took some NyQuil and went to bed.

Today I feel worse than I did yesterday. I called around and found out that a walk in clinic was still open so I headed over there.

After waiting a couple of hours I saw the doctor and she was like, "Wow...I'm glad you came here today...if you waited too much longer you could've had Pneumonia!"

So anyways...to make a long story short....I got an antibiotic shot along with many medicines and now I am home recuperating.

The amazing part was that my 4 medications I was written cost $7.00 a piece!

*Again...THANK GOD FOR INSURANCE!!*

Anywho, I'm going to eat my Chicken Flavored Ramen Noodles and rest.

Back from the hiatus

Sorry for the mild hiatus, but blogging has not exactly been on my priority list lately.

School, work and clinical have consumed my life as of late.

By the grace of God, I was blessed with an opportunity to transfer floors where I work. God has allowed me to see a completely different side of Nursing that I very much appreciate. As a result of working in Psych, I now know that I prefer not to be a psych nurse.

God blessed me with a job offer on the floor I'm actually doing my clinicals on *Med/Surg*.

I am very thankful that God is continuing to look out for me with work, seeing as I have been stressed out about the psych unit lately.

I have 63 hours of clinical finished so far, only 177 hours left for the semester! I've gotten to do all sorts of cool things ie: start IV's / give meds / discharge & admit patients / patient teaching etc.

I have been studying everyday for my nursing school exit exam. This exam will be tough, but I just want to praise God ahead of time for the victory of me passing this exam the FIRST time (on October 17th).

After working 3-11 Friday through Sunday and 12 hour shifts on Monday and Tuesday for clinical, I was basically exhausted for school on Wednesday. We just happened to have our first exam that day...let me just say that I have NEVER in my life fallen asleep during exam...until Wednesday. Sadly I made a 73 on it, but I will pull my grade back up.

Working and going to school is a tough act to follow at times.

Moral has been low at work for the past 5 months. People are quitting left and right, and demands are getting harder on us. A bunch of us at work have been praying non-stop for God to intervene. Our immediate boss is a sweet lady, but is not a very good leader. We have been brow beaten and written up for ridiculous things! Coming to work anymore has become a chore, especially since we feel we are always walking on egg shells.

Anyhow to make a VERY long story short, God intervened today...through me. I was scared, but God gave me peace. I was flustered inside, but God calmed me down. He spoke through me today and allowed me to make a positive difference at work. In a situation that looked as though I was to be fired, God intervened! He blessed me with favor from those I needed it from. He blessed me with the words to say, the thoughts to think and the feelings to feel. Instead of being fired *or me quitting* , I was asked to stay 90 days to 'give them another chance' to improve moral on the unit. Amy was like....

Needless to say I am still in awe at the whole situation...but am thankful to no end for my God who loves me.

Well, I'm one tired girl and I'm going to get some shut eye.

Hey everyone! Sorry it's been awhile since I last updated, but as usual life has been busy.

I started my last clinical for nursing school last week and I LOVE both the floor I'm on as well as my preceptor! As of now I have a total of 38 hours out of my 240 for my clnical this semester.... only 202 left to go!

Next week is my first exam for the semester in my Nursing management class. It's a pretty straight forward class about leadership / delegation / becoming an active Nurse by joining various and sudry national nursing organizations.

Also, my exit exam for nursing school is exactly one month away *prayers that Geoff and I both pass the first time!!*

This is basically the same test I took last time *the time it took me 3 tries to pass the midcurricular* only they added nuring management and delegation questions to it.

I've been studying a LOT since mid July.

Ahhhh on cool weather is trying to come and stay in Tennessee for the fall. It was 90+ degrees Sunday and today I think it got to 76 *wahooo!*

I'm such a fall girl! I love the colors of the leaves, the crisp cool air, the scent of fires burning in fireplaces....*happy sigh*

I've got a follow up appointment with my doctor tomorrow. Since my TSH has leveled out, she is suppose to write me another script for my current trial dosage of Synthroid. Also I am asking for copies of my entire medical history at my doctor's office. I am going to be taking this to my surgeon consult on the 29th. *which I am still excited about*

Life Update

Wow...sorry I haven't updated in a while, but school and work have been keeping me a busy girl.

School has been awesome thus far. We currently finished week # 3, only 13 more weeks to go!! *wahoo!!!*

I finally got to start my clinical on 4th floor, which is med surg and I LOVE IT! My preceptor is awesome and the atmosphere on the floor as well as good attitudes from the employees make it even better! I am very blessed to have my clinicals where I do. PRAISE GOD!

As for work, things have been VERY stressful. We're quite short staffed, which makes things rough on the unit. I find myself being more and more drained each night I come home from work. I pray that God intervenes at work and showers us abundantly with His blessings.

Also, I put in an application to a neighboring unit where I work. It would be full time, however getting things like studying and homework done will be a lot easier. So if you could, please pray that if it is God's will that I get this job...I will get it.

Lots of things have happened this week. I started school on Monday and was blessed to pass my dosage and calculations exam the first time! *happy booty dance*
I also found out that I am completely clear to start my last clinical *ie: student nurse insurance updated; vaccines updated; TB skin test updated; OSHA test completed*
I hope to be starting my last clinical within the next 2 weeks. This semester happens to be awesome in that we are responsible for attaining our 240 clinical hours before the semester ends. There are no set days for clinical. I like the flexibility, especially with my work schedule.

Aside from school matters, I also have a big piece of news to share with everyone.
*those people faint of heart might want to sit down for this one*

I went to the doctor on Tuesday and discussed a rather important matter with her. My weight has not changed, regardless of eating better and exercising. So I asked her opinion about possible bariatric surgery *ie: gastric bypass*
I never in a million years thought I would even consider something as life altering as gastric bypass but with the current state of my health and the fact that I'm only 24 years old, I have been thinking about it a lot lately.
To my surprise, my doctor wrote me a referral to a bariatric surgeon. Due to my hashimoto's thyroiditis/ PCOS/ Depression /history of seizures, my doctor thought that I might benefit from gastric surgery. After calling the surgeon's office I was given an appointment to see the surgeon on October 27th.
I went by the surgeon's office on my way home from school today to fill out a rather large packet of information concerning my current health amongst other things.
I asked one of the receptionists if I could get my appointment moved up earlier and to my surprise they happened to have a cancellation & moved it to September 29th!
I'm doing TONS of research about the gastric surgery and what helps is that I have a handful of friends that have had it done *one has had the surgeon I will have*
I have a great support system going on, including my family! *well..most of them*

So basically, I wait until my appointment to get the process started. I will have many MANY tests done prior to the surgery. ie: EKG/Blood work/Psych eval/Sleep apnea testing etc.
What helps a lot is that my insurance will cover the ENTIRE process! *surgery and all!*

I have had quite a productive day! I went to a local track and walked a mile, then drove to Walmart to purchase Turbinado sugar packets *only .68 cents per box!!*

After that I went to two different dollar stores to find autumn decorations. Since this will be my last fall in Tennessee for awhile I decided to go all out with the fall decor. I founds some great buys for....you guessed it...a dollar a piece.

I eventually came home and decorated our mailbox and front door with fall stuff.

Dad and I are smoking baby back ribs right now. It's pretty neat how all you need is a grill, aluminum foil, cedarwood chips and some spices.

We are experimenting with garlic and chives...

It has been a pretty awesome day so far!!

Ahh so this week I have cooked and baked healthy foods for the first time in AGES.

Dad and I have been experimenting grilling veggies n' things. The following is a concoction of zucchini /tofu / mushrooms / minced garlic / olive oil / rosemary / chives:

You basically grill in a cast iron pan until golden brown.
Let me just say that this was absolutely DELICIOUS! Okay...Dad even ate this *tofu and all*

Next on the menu I made homemade Blueberry Lava Muffins. Dad and I picked fresh blueberries lastnight from our blueberry bush and BOY are they good!

Lava Blueberry Muffins

1 1/2 cups wheat flour
3/4 cup turbinado sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
3/4 cup milk
1 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, cubed
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease muffin cups or line with muffin liners.
Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 cup turbinado sugar, salt and baking powder. Place vegetable oil into a 1 cup measuring cup; add the egg and enough milk to fill the cup. Mix this with flour mixture. Fold in blueberries. Fill muffin cups right to the top, and sprinkle with crumb topping mixture.
To Make Crumb Topping: Mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Mix with fork, and sprinkle over muffins before baking.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until done.

These muffins are moist and very delicious!!

...how comforting.....

Wow...so I wake up at my usual time at 4 am and head to the bathroom. As I was walking back to my room I hear my mom doing a mild freaking-out cry. Sleepy and half conscious I walk to her room and ask her whats up, she looked at me and said, "a bat was flying around my room and got in my face! Go wake dad up." Half amused I walk down the hallway to the staircase *not expecting anything whatsoever* and all of a sudden this bat swoops down in front of my face and I let out the most girly-blood-curdling scream known to mankind.

The bat apparently was flying around the living room trying to find a way out. As I got closer I saw one of the cats trying to run after it, thinking it was one of the bold cats (ie: harry, teddy, izzy) but no...it was my timid, half bald, de-clawed Emmy kitty!!

Needless to say I ran to my room and called dad on his phone downstairs. After a few rings he answers in a groggy half comatose voice, "yeah...?" After explaining to him about the bat, man that he is, he came up stairs to see what he would be dealing with.

Without so much as a thought, he looked me in the eyes as serious as can be and asked, "Do we have a tennis racket anywhere??" Taken back by his question I was reminded of the movie, The Great Outdoors. The more I thought about the whole situation, the more it seemed just like the bat scene in the movie. Dad went downstairs to find something to get the bat out of the house with as I stood in the hallway laughing to myself about the situation. While reminiscing about the movie of my childhood, the bat proceeded down the hallway right at me and again I let out the blood-curdling-girly scream and ran to my room.

I think dad ended up stunning it when he whacked the bat with a broom and threw it outside.

My dad deserves the dad of the year award for being his fearless self when it comes to animals/insects/scary situations.

So yeah....that was our fun morning today....

Sorry I haven't posted anything in awhile, but after today I will have worked 50 hours this week. *which by the way I am WAAAAY thankful for* and of course I have no access to blog sites where I work.

Anyhow, to enlighten you about the title of today's blog I have some interesting health news. For the past few months, I've been gradually feeling like crap ie: no energy/depressed / G.I. problems / unusual weight gain / low bp etc. I woke up around 7 o'clock on my only day off this week and had a peaceful notion to call my doctors's office to see if they could fit me in for an appointment. Of course, as God would have it, they had an opening in exactly one hour *whoo hoo!*

To make a long story sort, my doctor was shocked at the state I was in *because she knows how I am usually energetic and upbeat* and immediately had me get a bunch of labs done.

End result??? What else but a screwed up TSH *thyroid stimulating hormone* well above the norm which is to be between .5 and 5.00 *a whomping 7.12!! For non-medical folks, this means that my thyroid is not working as it should, thus my body is overcompensating by releasing lots of TSH in attempt to stimulate my already crappy thyroid. And of course your thyroid controls important things like metabolism etc. If you want more info for some odd reason check out the following site on my specific disease called hashimoto's thyroiditis

Nice to know that I'm not going crazy! *not yet at least*

SOOOoooooo now that we know the culprit of the problem *which at first I thought was depression* my doctor has increased my thyroid medication significantly.

Anyhow, sorry for the medical rant but it does feel good to write it all out. *at work we call this 'Journal Therapy'*

As for the rest of my life all is going well. I do, however, have a prayer request. My grandmother is having a 2nd ablation done on Monday and please pray that everything goes well, as well as peace for everyone involved.

I hope everyone has a terriffic weekend and hopefully I'll be able to post some of the artwork I've done lately.

It's getting a little easier each day dealing with the loss of Timmy kitty, in which I must give a shout out of praise to the Lord.

I've been in a pondering mood here lately about life in general. I think about how the summer is halfway over and in August I will be starting my very last semester of Nursing school. Then after graduating in December I will be quitting the healthcare company I've been with for 4 years and move down to Florida. I'm so stoked but scared at the same time, I guess we all fear the unknown to a certain extent. There is a song by Natalie Grant that speaks to my heart whenever I feel fearful or discouraged:

So I'm crying like a banshee right now because as mom was driving to work she saw one of our cats *mom's cat* Timmy dead by the side of our road.

Needless to say there was much boohooing.

I know some say 'It's just a cat' but Timmy *as with the rest of our cats* are family.
It hurts just as bad as if my own brother had died.

Dad came home from work and buried him in the back yard *our woods* with the other past beloved animals of our family.

Alright...for those of you who do not know my brother Greg *aka fitness fanatic-guru*
Let me enlighten you.....
Back in high school the guy would to a brisk "3-mile morning run" before school followed by daily weight room training and various freakish protein / creatine shakes.
Add the fact that he is a Marine and you've got what I call ' A workout Gremlin' **not the evil gremlin...but the fuzzy cute one**

Anyways, he took me to his gym, LA Fitness, and for two hours we did weight training and cardio.
My butt and quads have NEVER been this sore in my entire life....not even in band back in high school. I will say this though, he is a kick arse trainer and I am looking forward to him kicking my butt into shape when I permanently move down here. *yes....I'm a bit of a masochist*

After our workout we picked up some groceries, went home and hopped in the pool.
Greg made the most AMAZING turkey burgers I've EVER had!

I'm at a point in my life where things/people/places that I once called home somehow seem foreign to me. I feel like Jo March from the book, Little Women, when she desperately needed to get away from her hometown in search of 'something more'. I don't want to sound like a snob, but there is not a whole lot Kingsport can offer me anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's my childhood home...a place of memories...growing and love.

I've lived a happy life so far. I've met many people who have touched my life in various ways. I can honestly say that even though I've had many friends over the years, only a handful I can truly say are my 'best'. Regardless of how long it's been since we've spoken, or how many miles away we are...or how much age difference between us...they have been my most special blessings.

To Karla, Lucy and *last but not least* Mom, thank you for being you and for being in my life. You three somehow 'understood me' from the moment I met each of you. I love each of you dearly and thank you for seeing the real me...and still loving me anyways.

I want, crave, need and desire my move to Florida...if I could I'd move next week! I do, however, need to finish my last semester of Nursing school at ETSU in the fall.
Even though I dream of my new life to come, I know I must make some big life changes here before I go.

I'm nowhere near where I need to be spiritually to withstand the vanity focused society of West Palm Beach, nor am I physically ready to meet the demands of my Nursing career. In a nutshell, my summer's focus' shall be to strengthen my spirit and strengthen my body. I truly want to be the Christian woman God wants me to be. I want to be a light and life to others around me and that others would see Jesus in my actions/thoughts/words/countenance.

Well, I do believe that is all for now.
